Converting the BMW I3 high-voltage battery from 60 Ah to 120 Ah

The BMW i3 was launched at the end of 2013 and was one of the brand's first electric vehicles. Previous models were also available with an optional range extender motor and featured a 60 Ah battery that has a range of up to 130 km when fully charged. However, times have changed over time and BMW has updated the model with larger capacity batteries over the years.
So what does it take to upgrade an older model with the newer, thicker and more powerful 120 Ah battery?

So what does it take to upgrade an older model with the newer, thicker and more powerful 120 Ah battery?

There are two options for upgrading the battery unit in a BMW i3. The first option is to replace the entire battery unit. This involves replacing the old battery unit with a new 120 Ah battery unit.
Upgrading to a more powerful battery is possible without making any significant changes to the vehicle.

The second option is to replace the battery blocks in the existing battery unit. This involves replacing the existing battery blocks with 120 Ah battery blocks. However, this option requires special tools as well as time and know-how in battery repair.

Which option is best depends on several factors, including the age and condition of the existing battery.
It is therefore advisable to contact a certified BMW technician to consider the best solution for the BMW i3.

In this project we converted the vehicle with the original I3 cells.
